60% of Hungarians support the legalisation of medical cannabis
Pollster company Závecz Research’s findings show that more that around 60% of Hungarians are in favour of legalising cannabis for medical use. On an even more surprising note, only 20% of government (more conservative) voters are categorically against it.
The survey has been conducted by the request of the Hungarian Liberal Party, index.hu reports. In March, the party also wrote an open letter to Miklós Kásler, Minister of Human Resources arguing in favour of legalising medical cannabis. The letter was sent after the European Parliament adopted a resolution supporting the use of medical cannabis that is considered to be a milestone in the process of legalisation.
Ádám Sermer, the Liberal party’s candidate for the mayor of Budapest, held a news conference on the topic. He accused Miklós Kásler of “not understanding the will of the Hungarians” and called for his resignation.
According to the survey, approximately 60% of Hungarians support the legalisation of cannabis for medical use. If we look at the data more closely, we can find intriguing things: firstly, and not surprisingly, an age group heavily in favour of legalisation is the youth (62%). However,
the legalisation of medical cannabis is most widely supported in the eldest age group, people aged 60+. 63% of them are in favour.
The proportion of those who specifically do not wish medical cannabis to be legalised is below 20% while those who do not know take up just 22% of Hungarians.
Last year, the use of medical cannabis was legalised in the UK, following in the footsteps of Luxembourg, Lithuania and Portugal. Cannabis or marijuana remains the most popular drug in Hungary, while police promise to stand up against street use more than ever.
