Chaos in Budapest: is this how the traffic jams will come to an end?
By 16 November, the pedestrian overpass on Sasadi road will disappear, but there’s no need to panic: it’s all part of the DBR Metro Project Management’s plan, writes nol.hu.
Sasadi road will be closed for a couple of hours on the night of 15-16 November to dismantle the overpass, but only if the pedestrian/cycle underpass is finished on the Beregszász street and Alsó Beregszász street segment.
Not only pedestrians will be able to cross the road safely using the underpass, but by 24 November, the road reconstruction between BAH junction and Pannonhalmi street, which causes the daily traffic jams, will be finally finished if everything goes according to plan. There’s no guarantee, that it’s going to be the end of the traffic jams, but because those who are going towards the city will have two lanes again, the lines might get a little shorter.
Parallel with the road reconstruction, the utility lines of Főgáz Földgázelosztási Kft. (Ltd. responsible for the natural gas distribution), Fővárosi Vízművek Zrt. (The Budapest Waterworks), and Elmű (Budapest Electricity Works) have been renewed as well.
The dangerous crossing at Töhöm street (which was nicknamed “deathcrossing”) has been rebuilt, and the traffic lights will be installed in Spring 2016. New plants have been planted, the pavement has been repaved, and the bus stops will be unobstructed.
The construction of the new motorway-junction at Őrmező (which is part of the Metro 4 project and costs 7.18 billion HUF) will probably be finished by April 2016 (instead of December 2015); when it’s finally done it will make the drivers’ life much easier as they will no longer have to use the dangerously narrow lanes on the M1-M7 motorway.
The underpass of the motorway is going to have two horseshoe shaped parts: one for those who are going towards Metro 4’s parking lot, or going out of the city and want to turn back; the other part is for those who would like to go in the direction of Gazdagrét, Budaörs, or Lake Balaton.
The only restriction the new junction will have is that those using the M1-M7 motorway and are going towards the city, will not be able to go in the direction of Beregszász road, and will not be able to go towards the areas northwest from Budaörsi road.
However, this restriction does not apply to buses; buses departing from the Őrmező bus station will be able to go in the direction of M1-M7 motorway, and the buses going towards Lake Balaton and Budaörsi road will stop at Sasadi road. It will make it possible to transfer to buses coming from Széll Kálmán Square, and Kosztolányi Dezső Square.
However, the junction is far from finished; the construction might end in April 2016.
