Poisonous water from the tap? This is why Hungarians do not drink enough water

Although the people of Europe have access to clean tap water, including Hungary, a recent EU survey showed that people do not use it as often as expected.

Pénzcentrum reported that the European Union would like to encourage people to drink more tap water because it is cheaper and produces less garbage. On the other hand, there are some Hungarian cities and towns where drinking tap water is definitely forbidden.

98.5% of European households have an adequate quality of tap water.

But in some Hungarian regions, the arsenic concentration of tap water is higher than the average, making it dangerous for the human body to consume. 

These are the Hungarian cities and towns where tap water should not be drunk (all of them located in Csongrád County):

• Fábiánsebestyén
• Földeák
• Óföldeák
• Kiszombor
• Makó
• Makó-Rákos
• Maroslele

According to the latest statistics, besides the towns mentioned above, there are thirty-eight more where the quality of the tap water poses danger for people. In these regions, there is regular transporting of clean water for local residents.

President: ‘Drama’ of scarce, polluted water ‘unfolding before our eyes’

President János Áder said at the opening ceremony of the international Budapest Water Summit on Tuesday that “the drama of scarce water, too much water, and polluted water is unfolding before our eyes.”
