State secretary: Marriages up in Hungary
Marriage is once again seen as being a good thing, Katalin Novák, the state secretary for family and youth affairs at the Ministry of Human Resources, said in an interview to Saturday’s Magyar Nemzet newspaper.
Commenting on the latest Central Statistical Office data, Novák said there had never been as many marriages in Hungary as in the recent period, adding that the government’s policies in support of families had probably acted as an incentive.
“We have no doubt that the child to be born is the best investment,” she said.
In July, the number of marriages was 31 percent higher than a year earlier, and in August more than 11,000 couples wedded, the highest figure in the last 40 years.
From Jan-Aug this year, 43,212 couples got married, KSH data show, 18 percent more than the number registered in the same period last year.
