Opposition party seeks to protect pay equity in constitution
Budapest, December 27 (MTI) – The opposition Dialogue for Hungary (PM) party is submitting an amendment that would include equal pay for men and women among the fundamental human rights protected in the constitution, a senior party official said on Sunday.
Board member Gabor Eross said in a statement on Sunday that wage equity as a basic human right was not enshrined in Hungary’s new constitution while the country’s earlier constitution had stated that “everyone has the right to an equitable wage for equitable work, without discrimination”.
If the government really aims to prevent negative discrimination against women, it must support the proposed amendment, Eross said.
The PM party will also ask lawmakers to join the United Nations’ “He for She” gender equality initiative, he added.
