Caucasian sources of Hungary’s prehistory shown at new exhibition
The Hungarian National Museum opened an exhibition presenting the Caucasian origins of Hungarian prehistory on Monday.
Human Resources Minister Miklós Kásler told the opening event that
the realisation of Hungarians’ eastern origins had always been an organic part of national idenitity.
However, placing the theory of the origins of Hungarians on the basis of language was a science-policy decision that “everybody in the past at least 150 year felt was rather unstable”.
“The traditional legends and chonicles of Hungary clearly demonstrated the continuity in Scythian-Hun-Hungarian relations,” he added.
“This was impossible to prove during the time of Habsburg science policy and later in the Bolshevist era because the research areas in the east were not accessible to Hungarian researchers,” he said.
He praised the work of the exhibition’s curator Lezsák M Gabriella who also headed the excavations of the presented material.
The exhibition includes objects on loan from the Marjani Foundation in Moscow, the Krasnodar State Historical and Archaeological Memorial Museum, the Anapa Archaeological Museum, the National Széchenyi Library and the Library of Parliament in Budapest, and runs until April 26.
