Academy’s mathematics prize awarded to US professor

Budapest, January 6 (MTI) – The Hungarian Academy of Science’s Bolyai Janos Prize for mathematics was handed over to Barry Simon, professor at the California Institute of Technology, in Budapest on Wednesday.

The US professor was recognised for his 2005 work Orthogonal Polynomials on the Unit Circle.

The Bolyai Prize is given in encouragement to authors whose work could influence the next generations of scientists, Academy head Laszlo Lovasz said in his address at the prize-giving ceremony.

The Bolyai Prize was founded in 1902, to mark the 100th anniversary of the famous Hungarian mathematician, but was discontinued after the outbreak of the first world war. The prize was reestablished in 1994, as the Hungarian academy’s only international award, given every five years.
