Budapest Airport schedules runway maintenance
In order to ensure safe and efficient operation, Budapest Airport will complete maintenance and development works on the runways of Ferenc Liszt International Airport before the summer peak. Runway 1 is scheduled to be closed from the end of March, and runway 2 will be closed down at the end of May for no more than 2 weeks each, unlike more extensive periods of runway closure previously. The airport can ensure the safe departure and arrival of aircraft also during single-runway operation; the scheduled runway closures will not cause any disruption in air traffic.
Due to the maintenance of concrete surfaces, joint replacement works, and other maintenance tasks, runway 1 of Ferenc Liszt International Airport is scheduled for temporary closure from the last week of March until the end of the first week of April. Runway closures are necessary in order to maintain the highest possible level of aviation safety.
The longer runway 2 is scheduled for closure at the end of May, where in addition to general maintenance, the airport operator will complete development works as well.
The airfield ground lighting system along the runway will be upgraded, as a result of which the energy consumption of the airport will be reduced. The holding point near the runway-taxiway crossing where aircraft wait directly before take-off will be brought closer to the runway, and therefore aircraft will have a shorter taxi route to the runway after clearance for take-off going forward. This will result in shorter turnaround times for flights, thanks to the more efficient airfield infrastructure.
Budapest Airport maintains and upgrades runways and taxiways on a yearly basis, or more frequently if necessary, in order to keep the highest level of aviation safety at the airport. Installation of a state-of-the-art instrument landing system was completed last year to assist the safe landing and take-off of aircraft in low visibility conditions.
This year’s works are scheduled by Budapest Airport to allow the handover of both runway 1 and runway 2 to traffic before the summer peak.
