How many years of healthy life do Hungarians have?
The statistics of Eurostat reported that Hungarian women live approximately 17.8 years unhealthily, while for men, this is only 12.3 years since women live longer.Â
Pénzcentrum reported that in the EU, women live approximately 64 years in perfect health, while for men, this number is 63. The average lifespan of women is an estimated 84 years, and for men, it is 78, the difference being about 5.5 years, according to Eurostat’s estimates. Among the EU member states, the healthiest women live in Malta (73.4 years), followed by Sweden and Ireland. On the contrary, in Latvia, women only have 54 years of a healthy life while men have 51.Â

The average lifespan when a person is born was generally higher in nineteen EU states regarding women, but the difference between the two genders was not significant. The highest was found in Poland (3.6 years) and Bulgaria (3.6). In seven states, the average of healthy years was lower for women. In the Netherlands, for example, men live 4 years longer than women, while in Denmark, it is 3.4 years.Â
In Hungary, women live for 61.8 years healthily while men do for 60.4 years. On the other hand, Eurostat showed that Hungarian women had an approximately 79.6-year-long average lifespan in 2018, while for men, it was only 72.7 years.Â

Indeed, life expectancy at birth has not increased by much in Hungary for a long time. The Central Statistical Office published data about the regional differences in Hungary, and in one of their graphs, the CSO writes about the differences in life expectancy.
