Coronavirus in Hungary – 10 new fatalities, number of registered cases rises to 1,984

Another 10 elderly patients suffering from chronic diseases have died in Hungary and the number of registered novel coronavirus infections has risen by 68 to 1,984, koronavirus.gov.hu said on Monday morning. So far, there have been 199 fatalities and 267 people have left hospital after recovery.

There are over 11,240 people in hospital or home quarantine, 60 are treated on ventilators. So far, 48,057 coronavirus tests have been conducted at accredited laboratories.

The epidemic is now at the stage of being spread through communities, and the virus could be present anywhere and infect anyone, the website said, warning that the actual number of people carrying the virus is much higher than the number of registered carriers.

The elderly, students and people returning from abroad must stay at home, it said. Everyone must observe the curfew restrictions which the government has extended indefinitely, it added.

Budapest has the highest number of infections (1,002), followed by Pest County (286) and Fejer county (159).

Orbán inspects epidemic hospital in C Hungary

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Sunday inspected the Magyar Imre Hospital in Ajka, central Hungary, designated to treat patients infected with the novel coronavirus, the prime minister’s press chief has said.

The hospital has been upgraded to receive up to 86 patients in need of intensive care, from the original 6 ICU beds.

In a video the prime minister posted on his Facebook page, Orbán noted that

one-seventh of all confirmed coronavirus patients have been recorded in a care home run by the Budapest municipality.

Hungary has 1,100 homes for the elderly nationwide, and the country will have to prepare for the disease emerging in all of them, Orbán said.

Orbán called a recent government order to free 60 percent of beds in every hospital a “dress rehearsal for the worst-case scenario”, adding that hospitals have to be prepared to receive all Covid-19 patients even if “bad comes to worst”.

“Everybody can sleep peacefully; all that become ill, will have a bed in a hospital,” Orbán said.
