State secretary Novák: EP resolution on Hungary measures ‘harmful and sad’ – Die Welt
The European Parliament’s move to censure Hungary in a resolution over its declaration of a state of emergency without a time limit is “harmful and sad”, Katalin Novák, the state secretary for family and youth affairs, said in an interview to German daily Die Welt late on Monday.
“Resolutions that contradict reality weaken, rather than strengthen the European People’s Party,” Novák told the paper.
Certain MEPs voted against the resolution, others abstained from voting and some supported it “because they didn’t have all the facts”, she said.
Novák noted, however, that the European Commission had recently confirmed that Hungary’s epidemic response law was in line with EU law, insisting that “this shows just how absurd the campaign against Hungary is.”
“In these difficult times, why aren’t we instead working towards a common European stance on how to live and do politics differently in the future?”
she said when asked about criticisms of the Hungarian government by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and EU Affairs Minister Michael Roth.
Novák said criticisms of the rules concerning Hungary’s state of emergency were “rooted in the past”, adding that certain politicians were attempting to use the crisis caused by the novel coronavirus pandemic to “finally punish the Hungarian government for its unorthodox behaviour during the migration crisis”.
As regards sanctions for spreading false information concerning the epidemic, Novák said:
“Not a single journalist is behind bars and only the deliberate and malicious spreading of falsehoods that hampers the fight against the epidemic can be punished.”
Concerning German domestic politics, she said the crisis would “bring about a renaissance of classical Christian Democratic values” and strengthen opposition to “globalism” and bureaucracy.
