Over 80 pc of Hungarians against migrant quotas

Budapest (MTI) – Fully 84 percent of Hungarians would reject the EU’s mandatory migrant quotas in a referendum while 10 percent would approve the scheme, a survey conducted by pollster Századvég after the announcement on the referendum proposal shows.

Századvég prepared the survey right after the prime minister announced on Feb. 24 the proposal to conduct a national referendum on the quota system.

In the planned referendum citizens will be asked “Do you want to allow the European Union to mandate the resettlement of non-Hungarian citizens to Hungary without the approval of the National Assembly?”.

In the survey Századvég conducted on Feb. 24-25, the pollster asked 500 voting age adults how they would vote in the referendum proposed by the government on the mandatory quota system.

Among respondents with left-wing sympathies, 57 percent rejected the scheme, as did 84 percent of respondents who identify as centrists, the survey showed. Among respondents sympathising with the right, 97 rejected the scheme.

Among respondents supporting the allied ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrats, the quota system was rejected by 97 percent, among supporters of Jobbik by 89 percent and among supporters of the Socialists by 56 percent. Among supporters of green opposition LMP, 51 percent rejected migrant quotas as did 49 percent of the supporters of the leftist opposition Democratic Coalition.

In terms of age groups, the quota system’s disapproval rate was 90 percent among those aged between 40 and 50, 86 percent among those aged 60 or above, 83 percent among those aged between 50 and 60 and 81 percent in the 23-30 age bracket, Századvég said.
