Hungary passes chairmanship of International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance to Romania
Berlin, March 9 (MTI) – Hungary on Tuesday formally passed the 12-month rotating chairmanship of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) to Romania at a ceremony in Berlin, the headquarters of the organisation’s general secretariat.
Hungary held IHRA’a chairmanship under the leadership of government commissioner Szabolcs Takács, state secretary in charge of EU affairs at the prime minister’s office.
Hungary notched up successes during its chairmanship of the organisation, whose mission is to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive and promote related scientific research and education, Takács told MTI after the ceremony.
As chair, Hungary increased IHRA’s visibility and ensured that access to archives on the Holocaust would not fall under EU’s new data protection regulation.
This is one of IHRA’s most important achievements, since it is the first time that the organisation has managed to enforce its own interests within another international organisation, said Takács.
