Reconstruction of Budapest Airport expressway to be developed

The narrow corridor at the Budapest Airport expressway will disappear to make the road safer. The road will get an additional two lines, and even a bicycle road is planned. With the new investment, the traffic of South Pest will improve significantly.

Index reported that the Budapest Airport expressway was built eighty years ago but was considered to be outdated and dangerous even then. The Hungarian Government decided in 2018 that significant renovations and investments are necessary for making the road suitable for the current traffic and safety standards. 

The project is also part of major city development as it could significantly correct the traffic of South Pest.

The project aims to make the traffic of the road safer and quicker. The expressway is currently among the most dangerous parts of Budapest. Accidents can cause incredibly massive traffic congestions for hours. In February, the leadership of Budapest and all the districts involved have accepted the project and investors need to prepare the official documentation and financial background until 2022. 

Starting from Határ Road, with the development of the hubs at Gyömrői Road and Üllői Road, the aim of the project is to make the road safer, wider and available for bicycles as well.
