March 15 commemorations of 1848-49 freedom fight to take place in over 20 countries
Budapest, March 11 (MTI) – Commemorations of the Hungarian 1848-49 revolution and freedom fight will take place around the March 15 national holiday in over twenty countries, organised by the Balassi Institute and Hungary’s cultural diplomats.
Events will mark the occasion in Vienna on March 14 with a speech by Gergely Gulyás, deputy speaker of parliament, and the placing of a wreath at the statue of Hungarian poet György Bessenyei, a key figure of the Hungarian enlightenment.
In Berlin on Tuesday the programme will be mainly literary and connected with the programme of the Leipzig International Book Fair. In the Hungarian Academy in Rome and elsewhere in the Italian capital there will be a series cultural events, including a performance of Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle. In London, the commemoration will take place in St Peter’s Church, organised by the London Hungarian Cultural Centre and Hungary’s embassy.
Other events will take place in Zagreb, Paris, Helsinki, Istanbul, Ljubljana, Delhi and Beijing.
