There are several places and events in Budapest that will remain memorable for a long time due to some great American icons who left their mark on the Hungarian capital. Who are they, and what did they do in the Hungarian capital? Come with us for a travel in time and discover the American side of Budapest. 

The historic atmosphere of Budapest is not only interesting for Hungarians but also for Americans. That is what inspired the initiative called “Hosszúlépés. Járunk?” (Great step, are we going?) walking tour, organised by the National Library for Foreign Languages. Within the framework of the programme, we can visit buildings on a variety of topics, while expert speakers who know the city well tell lesser-known stories about Budapest’s architectural treasures and hidden places.

The special walking tour includes American-related sites.

It shows us the mysteries of art deco, which is the first style trend that – even though it started in France – grew a lot in America and ended up in our small country.

As the Hungarian news portal Index reports, such walks are exciting any time of the year. You can choose from tours with different themes, so everyone can find the one that interests him/her the most – and then the city reveals a completely different side.

The tour also includes the first Hungarian McDonald’s building, opened in 1988, where the American burgers were tasted by the hungry audience in elegant dresses. Furthermore, the performers also evoke Hollywood, gleaming with scandals.

Walking towards today’s Marriott Hotel, for example, they revive the biggest birthday party ever held in Budapest. The hotel that belonged to the Intercontinental brand at the time perfectly symbolises the spirituality of the age.

The world-famous Hollywood actress, Elizabeth Taylor, honoured the Hungarian capital with her presence on her 40th birthday because her husband, Richard Burton, was filming the thriller Bluebeard in Budapest. The generous husband surprised the beautiful actress with a 400-year-old diamond necklace which was sold for EUR 5.5 million (~HUF 2 billion) in 2011.

Even though the ceremony could not be reported of at the time, the Hungarian capital was visited by several celebrities on this occasion, including Ringo Starr, Raquel Welch, Michael Caine, and Grace Kelly, the Princess of Monaco.
