Hungary’s deputy prime minister discusses migrant crisis, bilateral ties in Jordan

Amman, March 15 (MTI) – Zsolt Semjén, Hungary’s deputy prime minister, held talks in Amman on the migrant crisis and the development of bilateral relations during his visit to Jordan, Bertalan Havasi, the head of the prime minister’s press office, said on Tuesday.

Semjén met House of Representatives President Atef Tarawneh and Senate President Faisal al-Fayez to exchange views on boosting ties between the two nations and on international affairs. Both sides praised the development of inter-governmental and inter-parliamentary relations. On behalf of House Speaker László Kövér, Semjén invited Faisal al-Fayez to Hungary.

Meeting senior government officials, Semjén highlighted Hungary’s interest in developing cooperation in nuclear energy and water management, as well as boosting trade and investment. He noted that Hungary grants scholarship to hundreds of Jordanian students.

After visiting the Hungarian excavations in Machareus, Semjén stressed potentials in bilateral cultural and scientific relations.

The two sides agreed on the need to take steps against extremism and terrorism. They emphasised that the soonest possible negotiated settlement of the Syrian war would offer the sole way out of the crisis.

Hungary highly appreciates Jordan’s role in granting safe haven to refugees, and supports efforts to ensure that the country receives all possible assistance from the European Union in bearing the related burdens, the press office said.
