Pope Francis arrived in Budapest on Sunday morning to celebrate the closing mass of the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress.
He then met the Hungarian President János Áder and the Prime Minister Viktor Orbán before holding talks with Hungarian bishops. Afterwards, the pope met with the delegations of the Ecumenical Council of Hungarian Churches and Hungarian Jewish organisations.
Pope Francis greeted crowds in Budapest in the open-topped popemobile on his way to Heroes’ Square to celebrate the closing mass of the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress on Sunday.
Following a meeting with religious leaders at the Museum of Fine Arts, the popemobile turned down Andrássy Avenue from Dózsa György Street and travelled until Kodály Körönd, before turning around and returning to Heroes’ Square.
Many in the crowd waved Hungarian, Szekler, Polish, Spanish, Portuguese and Vatican flags.
Hungarian public media’s Rome correspondent said Pope Francis called his trip to Budapest “a visit to the heart of Europe”.
And now he is currently holding the closing mass, Statio Orbis at Heroes’ Square, closing the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress.
The pope is scheduled to leave for Bratislava in the afternoon.
