Hungarian Wizz Air to suspend 27 flights
The Hungarian-owned flight company announced new flights one after the other in the last few months. We have also written that it had become the fastest-growing airliner in Europe after the coronavirus epidemic. For example, it opened a new airbase in Venice, Italy, in October.
However, according to portfolio.hu, they decided yesterday to suspend some Balkan flights. The reason is that they expect a weaker demand on the Balkan routes in winter because of the quickly growing number of new infections. Based on their announcement, they plan to suspend flights to 27 destinations.
That include cities in North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo.
During winter, Wizz Air jets will not fly from Skopje to Bremen, Hannover, Malta, and Larnaka. The same applies to the Turku, Beauvais and Nurenberg routes between mid-November and mid-December.

Furthermore, the Hungarian low-cost airline will not fly from Ohrid (North Macedonia) to Malmö (Sweden), Milan (Italy) and London Luton. They are to suspend flights between Sarajevo and Charleroi and the capital of Kosovo and Beauvais. They will not fly from Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina) to Friedrichshafen, and from Baden-Baden to Göteborg (Sweden) during the winter, as well. Further flight suspensions include:
Winter:
- Tuzla-Skavsta
- Tuzla Vaxjo
- Beograd – Sandefjord (Norway)
- Beograd – Hannover
- Podgorica – Milan
- Podgorica – Budapest
Until mid-December:
- Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina) – Basel
- Beograd – Malta
- Nis (Serbia) – Malmö
- Pristina (Kosovo) – Rome
- Pristina – Milan
- Podgorica (Montenegro) – Vienna
As forbes.hu reported before, the Hungarian government supported the direct flights between Budapest and some Western Balkan cities between 2017 and 2021 with billions of HUF. That is because, after the bankruptcy of former Hungarian airline MALÉV, nobody wanted to operate flights to the Balkans from Hungary.
