HUF 28.6bn for second phase of superlaser project
(MTI) – The government has approved funding for the second phase of a superlaser center to be built in the south Hungarian city of Szeged under the European Union’s 2014-2020 financial framework, according to a decree published in the official gazette Magyar Kozlony on Friday.
The Economy Ministry will allocate 28.58 billion forints (EUR 92.7m) in funding for the EU-supported project.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Thursday laid the cornerstone for the first phase of construction of the superlaser centre. The first phase receives 36.998 billion forints, according to a government decision last year.
The second phase of construction of the laser center is expected to be completed in 2018.
Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania won a joint bid in October 2009 to run the EU Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) project, which Hungary will host at the University of Szeged, opening new avenues to reveal the secrets of matter on ultra-short timescales.
