One of the most popular tourist destinations in Hungary has disappeared – PHOTOS
Pictures appeared in several places about how the famous tourist attraction, the Lillafüred Waterfall, has disappeared. The waterfall also inspired the well-known Hungarian poet, József Attila. However, there is no need to panic as the waterfall has not disappeared permanently. Lake Hámori is frozen, so there is no supply for the waterfall.
The tourist attraction is gone
The last time this happened and word spread like wildfire about how the Lillafüred waterfall was not working was in 2019. However, the 20-metre-high waterfall, a natural attraction a few kilometres from Miskolc, has not disappeared permanently. In 2019, the reason for the disappearance of the waterfall was simple. It was because the waterfall is fed by the Szinva spring. The Szinva spring is fed by underground karst springs.
As there is no water supply, the Lillafüred waterfall has temporarily dried up.
The same thing has happened now, but for a completely different reason, writes sokszinuvidek.hu. János Viszokai, the technical director of MIVÍZ Kft., made a statement in connection with the events. “When there is not enough or no natural supply to the waterfall, we move water out of Lake Hámori. Sometimes it also creates a life-threatening situation as many people step on the ice of the lake despite the ban.”
So, under the layer of ice, there is no water but air, that is why the ice can easily break.

As long as there is ice, there is no waterfall
MIVÍZ operates the water transfer pump for the local government. In addition, their task is to maintain the equipment, writes minap.hu. The structure has been in Lake Hámori for more than 10 years. “A contract has been signed with the municipality to stop the replacement of the waterfall during the winter when a continuous layer of ice forms on the surface of Lake Hámori. This activity will be suspended until the layer of ice melts from the surface of the lake,” Viszokai added.
So, until the ice melts, there will be no waterfall.
