Robots to deliver your food order in Debrecen? – PHOTOS

According to a local politician from Debrecen, self-driving vehicles are going to be tested in the city. They want to use them to deliver food from restaurants.

We mostly write about Debrecen due to its leading role in Eastern Hungary, showing its importance as a university city. The city of about 200,000 inhabitants also plays an important role in the history of Hungary, and in recent decades, it has made it into European news with its men’s soccer and women’s handball teams.

However, this time, they made headlines with a completely different and unusual thing: they have a plan to use self-driving vehicles in the city. The project is in cooperation with two other European cities.

Food delivery by self-driving vehicles?

The ‘robots’ are developed by the Technical University of Catalonia and the CARNET Mobility Research Centre, says hvg.hu. The testing will start very soon, says Sándor Nagy, a local politician, in his Facebook post.

He also added that, other than Debrecen, the autonomous robots are being tested by experts in Hamburg and the Esplugues de Llobregat in Spain.

The device, called ADD, is 1.1 metres wide, 1 metre high, and 1.7 metres long. It is powered by six wheels, and the maximum speed is 20 kilometres per hour.

Story of development

The development has been underway since 2018, with the goal of creating a small-scale robot that could be responsible for the final stage of product delivery in the future.

According to Catalan news portals, it is very expensive to carry out the last stage of transporting. The ingredients may have travelled thousands of kilometres by then, but the last few metres of delivery could cost up to 40 per cent of the total delivery cost. In large cities, parking is always a problem for delivery vehicles, and in more and more cities, the possibility of entering the city centre by vehicles is strictly regulated or even banned. The developers say the ADD robot could provide a solution to this, says dehir.hu, the local newspaper of Debrecen.
