The Castle of Mikosd was once a beautiful, lively, and romantic place. Now, it gives the impression of a castle that is haunted by ghosts. However, this gives the building a different kind of beauty.

The Mikosd-Zierer Castle is a unique building complex that was built in an oak forest. In its prime, it even had an artificial hill, a pond, and an English park. The castle was built around 1860 in the Romantic style. Today, unfortunately, its former splendour only lives on in descriptions.

As it was reported by Origo in September 2021, the building is up for sale, offered for HUF 342 million (EUR 965,000). The Mikosd-Zierer Castle in Vas County takes up about 2,700 square metres and has a history that is worth knowing about.

The castle, with its Romantic and Neo-Gothic elements, was already very imposing when it was built. Even the location was special, nestled in a clearing in an oak forest.

The 63-room complex had its own generating station in Mikosd. In the park, a new pond was created by damming up the stream that flowed through the park, adjacent to the existing pond, which was home to swans and fish. The former cloverleaf-shaped fountain and the remains of the bathing pool can still be seen.

Around the castle was an English park with oak trees, silver spruces, lime trees, beech and plane trees, and lakes full of fish and swans. The lakes fed by the Széplak stream are still part of the castle complex. The ponds have dried up by now, but they could be replenished by reconstructing the sluice gate, which provides a natural water supply.

From 1956 to 1993, the castle was used as a children’s daycare centre. Although it was maintained during that time, after the regime change in 1989, nobody took care of it, and its condition deteriorated. Temporarily, there was a German owner who had some repairs done, but the property has been abandoned ever since.

The current owner has already replaced the roof, but the building is in need of major renovation.

In 2008, plans were drawn up to convert the property into a castle hotel, adding a new wing to the building, which would have increased the size from the current 2,700 square metres to 6,200 square metres. Currently, the 1.5-hectare castle includes a 4-hectare pond, the foresters’ lodge, and a triumphal arch gate.

The listed forest surrounding the main building is not part of the purchase price – however, it is also for sale.

  1. I knew I was right! The DNH writers ARE having an in-house competition to see who can use the word ‘mesmerising’ the most in any given month.
