Chinese community calls for anti-China street names to be changed in Budapest

Four streets in Ferencváros, a central district in Budapest, have been renamed earlier. The new names touch on four significant yet controversial topics that are directly linked to China. The project has deeply divided the society. The mayor of the district confirmed that despite the official letter from the Chinese community, the street names will not be changed.

Renamed streets in the 9th district

Four streets were renamed in the 9th district of the Hungarian capital. The new names covered four important subjects related to China such as freedom in Hong Kong, the Dalai Lama, and the symbolic form of religious freedom. 

According to the mayor of the district, the project intends to express solidarity towards the Asian country as well as promote universal freedom.

The initiative would probably have not taken place without the help of FUDAN University. After the act, many people stood by the decision, including the independent mayor, Krisztina Baranyi. However, there were also residents who objected to it. 

Those who disagreed with Baranyi asked the mayor in a joint letter to change the street names.

The disputed street names remain

On 24 January, Baranyi received a letter from the Chinese community to change the names in order to maintain the good relationship between Hungary and China. Ye Jianxin, President of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Hungary and Yu Meiming, President of the Hungarian Association of Overseas Chinese Associations also signed the letter which wrote that

  1. Hungary should not cave to Chinese pressure to change street names. See if the CCP is willing to remove street names in Bejing that have Marxist connotations, which Hungarians find offensive.

  2. I think the communists statues need to be replaced-I wonder if it will make them feel better. In 20 years China is already in position to dominate the world- thanks to the stupidity of the west but it too late now. Many of the west biggest and richest business a long with many of the one e greatest universities. It’s shocking to go to China today- imagine having more high speed rail than the rest of the world combined in 20 years. Hungary is an ant in the big picture and you won’t be able to ignore China- they could use it as leverage with EU and the US – even Russia. China is number one in education and has 1.1 million more people than the US is near the bottom and is focused on gender studies. Most of what has happened to China was taken or given to them from the west. With hard work they took advantage of it.
