Parliamentary Speaker Kover: Election Outcome Not To Change Hungary-Georgia relations

Budapest, February 13 (MTI) – Hungary’s foreign policy orientation, including its current excellent links with Georgia, will not change regardless of the outcome of the general election in April, parliamentary speaker Laszlo Kover said today.

Kover told a press conference after meeting Georgian counterpart David Usupasvili that Hungary will stand up for Georgia’s “sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within the internationally recognised borders” and knows no compromise in this issue.

Kover noted that he was the first Hungarian house speaker to pay on official visit in Georgia in 2011 and there have been regular visits ever since, including Budapest visits by the Georgian president, prime minister and foreign minister.

Hungary will continue giving all the help it can to Georgia’s Euro-atlantic integration and supports plans to sign an association agreement between Georgia and the European Union during the current European Commission mandate, Kover said.

Usupasvili said Georgia considers Hungary a reliable partner. There are common factors in the two countries’ history, such as both having suffered from Communist rule.

He said Georgia would welcome Hungary sharing its experiences in reforms and there are good opportunities for cooperation between the two countries’ parliaments after an amendment to the constitution in Georgia which significantly increased the role of parliament.
