So far, it seems we can plan outdoor activities for the long weekend, as sunny, partly cloudy, pleasant spring weather can be expected. Let’s see some programme possibilities for the upcoming days.
According to forecasters, it is safe to organise outdoor activities over the weekend, as the weather is expected to be mostly clear, reported Blikk. Although there will still be some frost at dawn, daytime temperatures will gradually rise,
resulting in sunny, partly cloudy, pleasant spring weather.
Let’s see what programmes are awaiting us during the long weekend.
Commemoration ceremony
On the occasion of the Memorial Day of the 1848/49 Revolution, visitors can watch the ceremonial raising of the Hungarian national flag with a military salute at Kossuth Lajos Square from 9 am, followed by a free visit to the Holy Crown in the Parliament building. From 3 pm, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will give a ceremonial speech at Kossuth Lajos Square.
Buda Castle and the Castle Garden Bazaar
All-day festive programmes await visitors with free entrance to the Buda Castle and the Castle Garden Bazaar.
The programme repertoire includes a 48th history walk, during which you can visit the sites of the 1848-49 Revolution and the fight for freedom in the Buda Castle. Visitors can also watch the historical performance of “The Revolution of the Actresses – The Beating Hearts of the 1848-49 Revolution”. In addition, the local Hussars Academy will offer playful and entertaining programmes for the younger ones, along with arts and crafts activities and a puppet theatre.
Museums
From Saturday to Tuesday, the Museum Garden offers a wide range of family programmes, craft and gastronomic fairs and concerts in the National Museum. The Museum of Military History is open to the public on 15th March from 9 am to 17 pm. Here, visitors can watch battle demonstrations and parade shooting or enjoy jewellery making and special dance performances by the Honvéd Dance Ensemble.
Children’s Railway tour
On 15th March, the popular “Following the Children’s Railway 20 km” performance tour will be held again this year. The performance tour will start on Tuesday between 8:00 and 10:00 at Széchenyihegy station.
The aim of the tour is to introduce the Children’s Railway and its surrounding places of interest, as well as sightseeing within the Buda Hills, to improve physical fitness, to raise awareness to the importance of knowing, loving, and protecting the environment, and to provide a meeting point for nature lovers who like the Children’s Railway and its surroundings. An interesting feature of the tour is that participants will be welcomed at the checkpoints along the route by former and current children’s train passengers.
House of Music, City Park
The House of Hungarian Music will be hosting a special musical and literary programme entitled “In the footsteps of the national song” on 15th March from 10 am to 2 pm. Ticket price: 1,000 Ft – 1,600 Ft. Check out more information HERE.
Excursion sites in Budapest
During the long weekend, it is worth taking advantage of the upcoming sunny days to take exciting tours in the Hungarian capital. Accordingly, we can visit the most impressive urban parks of Budapest. Go for a relaxing walk on the 2.5-kilometre-long green oasis of the city, Margaret Island, or discover the newly renovated City Park of Budapest. If you are up for a longer hike, you should not miss the Three Border Mountain, located 495 metres above sea level, or Sissi’s lookout tower in the Normafa Park.
