Hungarians love to get married, leading the EU
According to the latest Eurostat data, there were 6.88 marriages per thousand inhabitants in 2020, more than one percent more than in Latvia (5.63) and Lithuania (5.47), the second and third most likely countries to marry, according to the European Union’s statistical office.
The EU average is 3.2 percent, half the Hungarian propensity to marry.
In contrast, the lowest marriage rates were around 2 marriages per 1 000 inhabitants, which were reported
in Italy (1.6), Portugal (1.8), Spain and Ireland (both 1.9).
In 2020, Eurostat recorded 700,000 divorces out of 1.4 million marriages.
In Hungary, 1.52 divorces per 1,000 people were registered, just below the EU average of 1.6.
Malta (0.5) and Slovenia (0.8) had the lowest divorce rates, while Latvia (2.7) and Lithuania (2.7) had the highest divorce rates, the same as Denmark (2.7), followed by Sweden (2.5) and Finland (2.4).
