“Our most important ancient totem, which appears in animal form, like the bird of prey. It is the best-known figure in Hungarian mythology, the link between the earthly and the heavenly spheres, the symbol of unity, and the direction of the nation,” the concept plan reads.
The sculptor works in an archaic form, using contemporary tools. The sculptural composition is monumental. The bronze rock that forms the pedestal is 9.6 metres long and 6.5 metres high. The Miracle Deer is 4.5 metres high and 7.2 metres long.
The creator, Gábor Miklós Szőke, reports on the developments on his Facebook page, including the eagle standing in front of the Ferencváros football team stadium and the huge antlered game made for the World Hunting Exhibition. Most recently, he posted a sketch of the sculpture that will soon be completed.
“This is what the statue of the Miracle Deer will look like, rising from the garden of the beautiful Art Nouveau building of the former Post Office, now known as Buda Palace. I imagined the spirit animal of the Hungarians on top of a bronze rock, so that its deer body – which I created from thousands of “golden hair plates” bent from bronze sheets – would be intertwined with the sky and shine like a constellation at night,” Szőke writes.
