Hungarian expats hold demo for Szekler autonomy in LA, Cleveland
Washington, DC, March 10 (MTI) – Hungarians living in Los Angeles and Cleveland held events at the weekend supporting an initiative for Szekler autonomy, ahead of a protest in Targu Mures, Romania, on Monday.
At the event in Cleveland, a petition was read out from Balazs Izsak, chairman of the Szekler National Council (SZNT), in front of the local Catholic church.
A similar event will take place on Monday in Toronto with cultural performances.
In Targu Mures, the SZNT is organising a procession today to promote the Hungarian community’s territorial autonomy and freedom of speech. The procession, supported by MEP Laszlo Tokes, has been banned by the local authority, which only gave its consent to a commemoration. Organisers will hand over a petition to the authorities.
Last year 30,000 people took part at the event, which, however, was not officially supported by Romania’s largest ethnic Hungarian party, the RMDSZ.
