One of Hungary’s biggest petrol station chains introduces serious restrictions

Shell, one of Hungary’s largest petrol station chains, has introduced restrictions. The company announced the restrictions citing reduced supplier capacity.

You can buy petrol at Shell stations for a maximum of HUF 20,000 (EUR 48.9) and diesel for HUF 50,000 (EUR 122.23). According to Infostart, Shell announced the restriction citing “reduced supplier capacity in recent days”.

From 25 November 2022, Shell Hungary Zrt. will offer a maximum of HUF 20,000 gross of Shell FuelSave 95 petrol and HUF 50,000 gross of Shell FuelSave Diesel fuel per refuelling in its network of service stations. Some priority service stations, such as those along motorways, are exempted from the measure.

Small petrol stations have already been notified

MOL, the Hungarian oil company, had previously informed the smaller, family-owned petrol stations about some negative prospects. They said that in the interests of the country’s operations and energy security, they would be unable to provide them with diesel or petrol again from Monday 28 November.

The measure will affect 400-500 petrol stations. Typically, 8-9 people work at a petrol station, but now 4-5,000 jobs are at risk, Gábor Egri, president of the Independent Petrol Stations Association (FBSZ), told napi.hu.

The restriction is necessary

“This is a temporary measure to restrict fuel service. It only affects wells and retailers to which MOL does not have a service obligation,” MOL said on Friday. The oil company said the measure was necessary to maintain supplies in all parts of the country. They said the restriction was necessary because the price cap of HUF 480/litre meant that demand remained high in Hungary.

FBSZ has updated its list, which shows an increase in the number of stations suffering from fuel shortages. The full list can be found at THIS link.
