Budapest’s newest bridge will be built between Csepel Island (the 21st district of Budapest) and the 22nd district of the capital. The Galvani bridge’s construction process reached a new milestone yesterday since the archway got its legally binding building permit.

The planning process of the new bridge of South Budapest started back in 2018 and was finished yesterday, according to Balázs Fürjes, the government commissioner of major investments in Budapest. He also added in his post that Budapest’s future is in the South. He called the abandoned regions of South Pest, North Csepel and South Buda the golden reserves of Budapest.

Mr Fürjes wrote that the new bridge would reduce the traffic burden of the downtown bridges. Moreover, it will connect the Southern regions of Budapest.

The first time the Council of Budapest included the Galvani Bridge in the official urban planning strategy of the capital was in 1985. The designs and plans were made by the Dutch Buro Happold and the British UNStudio. Their Hungarian partner was the CÉH Tervező, Beruházó és Fejlesztő Ltd. The cost of the plans was HUF 4.5 billion (EUR 11 milion), and the Hungarian government covered all costs.

Fürjes said the number of cars swarming into the downtown would decrease by 50 thousand when the bridge is ready. Trams, bikes and pedestrians will use the new archway. Moreover, the bridge will create a new promenade around Budapest with treelines and bike paths connecting the M1/M7 with Üllői Street.

The “only” problem is that there is not enough money to start the birdge’s construction. The decision-maker on the issue will be János Lázár, the minister for construction and investment.
