Rick Astley, Thievery Corporation and many more to come to the Paloznak Jazz Picnic 2023

Among others, Thievery Corporation, Dirty Loops, Incognito and Nik West will be at the next Paloznak Jazz Picnic.

Next year’s Jazzpiknik will be opened by American funk-rock and soul singer and bassist Nick West. From a very young age, he has played alongside the greats, working with world stars such as Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and Prince. As a soloist, he became known for re-singing AC/DC’s Back in Black.

Day 1

According to the official site, the opening night on 3 August will also feature Rick Astley, one of the most popular pop singers of the eighties, whose hit Never Gonna Give You Up is a hit everyone remembers. In the 2000s, he released a string of compilation albums and was voted Best Artist of All Time at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards. Her 50th birthday album topped the UK charts in 2016, and two years later she released another album, Beautiful Life. In 2019, he gave a successful concert at the Paloznak Jazz Picnic, where he will return next year.

Day 2

The second day of the festival, on 4 August, will feature a performance by Thievery Corporation, a popular act on the electronic music scene. The Washington duo’s story began more than two decades ago, their music blends genres of dub, bossa nova, trip hop, acid jazz and electronica. Their 1997 debut album, Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi, was born as a redefinition of electronic music, and they went on to release ten studio albums. With over a million records sold, they have been self-produced and independently released, yet they remain a dominant force in electronic music to this day.

Day 3

Friday evening continues with a concert by the Swedish pop-funk-jazz fusion trio Dirty Loops, three young musicians (Jonah Nilsson – vocals, keyboards; Henrik Linder – bass; Aron Mallergardh – drums) who became known in 2011 for their original Lady Gaga cover, which they uploaded to YouTube and whose video has received huge views. Their experimental series of pop-funk-jazz fusion covers is now a world-famous production, and since 2014 they have released their own albums.

Day 4

On the closing day, Saturday 5 August 2023, Incognito, one of the most important acid-jazz bands, will play at Jazzpiknik. The group, which grew out of the British fusion jazz-funk world of the 1970s, started out as a studio project of Paul “Tubbs” Williams and Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick. Tubbs and Bluey formed the band in 1979, with Funkadelic as one of their main inspirations. The breakthrough came after 1990, when they signed to Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label. In 1991 they exploded with a cover of Ronnie Laws’ Always There, and a year later they released Don’t You Worry ’bout a Thing, which became a big hit. From then on, Incognito shed the club hits. The group has reformed from time to time, and now boasts around 150 musicians, but Bluey is still the key figure.
