VIDEO, PHOTOS: Astonishing bike path around Lake Balaton ready!
A 2-kilometre-long segment was missing near Balatonrendes. Now it is ready, so the popular cycling route around Lake Balaton is completed.
The last segment was inaugurated by Máriusz Révész, the government commissioner for an active Hungary. The path is now 205 kilometres long and open for Hungarians and tourists alike. Hungary’s Transport and Construction Ministry said that half the route was built in only a couple of years for HUF 6.1 billion (EUR 162.3 million). They added that following the Danes and the Dutch, Hungarians cycle the most in Europe. Furthermore, cycling around the so-called “Hungarian Sea” is very popular among tourists. Therefore, such developments are important and help the economy of the Balaton region, szmo.hu wrote.
The last 2-kilometre-long segment goes through a beautiful forest. It cost HUF 500 million (EUR 1.33 million) because it includes a modern railway overpass. Before its completion, the cyclists needed to use the main road leading to Keszthely. In Hungary, the overall length of the cycle path may reach 15 thousand kilometres, providing a safe and comfortable alternative to car use.
