You can buy land for HUF 1 in this Hungarian village!
In Tolnanémedi, Tolna County, municipal plots are sold for merely HUF 1. This is the village administration’s way of motivating citizens to build new houses in the village. According to the Mayor, all the conditions are there for a balanced, peaceful family life.
The village of Tolnanémedi in Tolna County has a population of just over a thousand.
“The municipality of Tolnanémedi sells municipal plots for HUF 1 to those who want to build in our municipality, in order to motivate citizens to build new houses in our village. For some time now, people have often found it too expensive to build new houses,” Mayor László Vígh told teol.hu.
Mayor Vígh said that the settlement has all the conditions for a balanced, peaceful family life. The public buildings have been renewed in recent years: the kindergarten, the former primary school, the community centre, the municipal office, the cemetery have been renovated. Furthermore, the lookout and resting place on the Nebojsza hill in Tolnanémedi is also being continuously renewed.
“Our economic situation may not be the best, but we persevere to the end. We are supported by state money, we have little income, so we are relying on the continued support of the Hungarian government,” the mayor said.
He added that the local pharmacy and the doctor’s office are still awaiting energy renovation. The roads and pavements are constantly being renewed, and the drainage ditches are regularly cleaned. One of their priorities is also the final eradication and landscaping of the illegal landfill site in Tolnanémedi.
“This offer is for those who want to settle in Tolnanémedi in the long term. Strict rules must be respected before this can happen. It is not that Tolnanémedi is being for sale for HUF 30. Those who are interested will have to meet the conditions for settlement that are being worked out,” he added.

How to buy, what’s the process. Share in detail
It is not finalized yet, the press picked it up way to quickly. Check the website of this small village, and you can read it on their main page.
So many places are doing this now to keep rural dying communities from disappearing. They generally want entrepreneurs or families with at least 3 or 4 kids. Seniors who have reliable pensions are a good bet, however they often end up taking more than giving to communities. However, if a community builds all the infrastructure for seniors first an entire small village can become the lifeblood of a place because seniors have lots of needs which create employment…but younger people have to be willing to stay & provide those tasks. For instance, a gated community for people with no adult children, have dementia but do not want to be in an institution. Or a group of homes built around a central courtyard so that kids can’t wander off…and alternate houses for young families with empty nesters. Each helps the other and then it really does “take a village to raise a child”.
Is it OK for non Hungarians to buy land and live in these dying rural communities?
I’m collecting a list of similar places where I can buy cheap land and live off of it, so if someone knows more info on this topic please reach out to me.
