Budapest’s downtown district shuts down illegal Airbnbs one after the other
The mayor of Terézváros (Budapest’s 6th district), Tamás Soproni, set up a so-called “Airbnb commando” to shut all illegal Airbnbs in the district. And they find a lot of that type.
According to 444.hu, the mayor’s office of Budapest’s 6th district issued in a statement that they will continuously inspect the short-term accommodations in the district. The first raid’s results were five illegal Airbnbs out of the eight examined. Tamás Soproni, the district Momentum party mayor, added that Terézváros was the first district of Budapest trying to regulate short-term flat rentals.
Their goal is to establish an environment for the industry during which such accommodations will no longer disturb the locals. Having said that, they also expressed that they don’t wish to make life difficult for those who work in the Airbnb sector. Even though they sent their proposals to the prime minister’s office, they have not yet received an answer. Therefore, they set up a commando to check the Airbnbs.
The aim is to find illegal places operating without a NTAK number. Now, the five owners of illegal Airbnbs will be fined by multiple authorities after the mayor’s office reported their activities. Soproni said the monitoring process will continue during the summer, and they will catch all the illegally-operating Airbnbs owners. As a result, they can provide peace and harmony for the locals.
