Travelling with Ryanair from Hungary may change fundamentally soon
Michael O’Leary, the CEO of the Irish low-cost airliner, said before that he would like to introduce a new fee concerning all passengers travelling on their planes.
We wrote about the European Parliament’s new idea to harmonise European luggage transport rules. Currently, different airline rules on baggage restrictions result in hidden charges and make it difficult to compare prices. If the European Parliament can achieve a baggage price harmonisation, it could have negative consequences, especially for Wizz Air, Ryanair, and other low-cost airlines.
The MEPs accepted the relevant resolution at the plenary session of the European Parliament last Wednesday. However, it is just an intention, the EP cannot make laws, only recommendations for the European Commission. Telex wrote that the institution consulted about the relevant transport decree’s supervision. Thus, it might happen the resolution will become a rule. Or not. That is because the European Commission has been evaluating a possible modification since 2019 and they believe that they should respect the airlines’ commercial freedom.
If Ryanair, Wizz Air and other airlines were made to stop “tricking” their consumers with luggage, seats, meals, and other “technicalities”, there would still seem to be creative ways to make passengers pay extra fees. According to index.hu, Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary raised years before that they should charge toilet use during the flight. An advantage of the measure would be that fewer passengers would use the toilet, which annoys others, O’Leary highlighted.
