VIDEO: Huge fire and smoke at Hungary’s largest refinery

According to the National Directorate General for Disaster Management, the damage occurred on the MOL site. The fire brigade of MOL’s plant is in charge of the response, but the fire brigade of Érd is also involved.

A giant cloud of smoke is billowing over MOL’s Danube Refinery in Százhalombatta, 24.hu reports. The National Directorate General of Disaster Management told 24.hu that the damage occurred in the area of the plant in Százhalombatta, the response is being led by MOL. The MOL fire brigade of the plant is participating in the operation, but the fire brigade of Érd is also involved.

About what exactly happened, the oil company wrote to Portfolio: “During the unloading of a truck’s tank, containers caught fire for unknown reasons at the Danube Refinery, the headquarters of a MOL subsidiary. The fire was extinguished by the FER Facilities Fire Brigade together with specialists from the fire brigade of Érd. One minor personal injury was reported.”

The incident has no impact on the normal operation and production capacity of the refinery and an investigation has been launched.

The Danube Refinery started operations in 1965. Operated by MOL, it employs nearly 1,200 people, according to oil company officials. With a capacity of 165,000 barrels per day (8.1 million tonnes per year), it is one of the largest refineries in the CEE region.
