Important changes in public transport services over festive period in Hungary
During the festive period, timetables of train and bus services and the HÉV (suburban railway line) will change. It is worth buying your tickets in advance if you do not want to reschedule your family visits.
Changes in MÁV timetables during the holidays
Transport services will operate according to a different timetable at Christmas and at the end of the year, New Year’s Eve, Mávinform reports. From 22 December to 2 January, on busy days, InterCity trains will run with more carriages than usual on busy mornings and afternoons. On Elvira, MÁV’s ticket selling website, the seat occupancy of a given train can already be observed on the basis of ticket sales.
Mávinform stressed that it is worth buying tickets in advance as soon as possible, or using the ticket machines and online ticket purchase on Elvira or the MÁV app.
On 24 and 25 December, trains will run according to the public holiday timetable, on 26 December according to the Sunday timetable, on 31 December according to the public holiday timetable, on 1 January according to the Sunday timetable and from 2 January according to the normal working day timetable.
Changes in Volán timetables during the festive period
Local and intercity bus services of Volánbus will also change during the holidays.
On Thursday (21 December), services will run according to the timetable for the working day and the last school day of the week; on Friday (22 December) according to the timetable for the last school holiday of the week and on Saturday (23 December) according to the timetable for the days off.
On 24 December, Christmas Eve, and 25 December, Christmas Day, buses will run according to the public holiday timetable.
On 26 December, the timetable will be that of the public holiday preceding the first working day of the week with a school holiday. Between 27 and 29 December, buses will run according to the timetable for the school holidays.
Please note that most bus services will be cancelled after 4 PM on 24 and 31 December, and many services will be cancelled on Christmas Days and between the two holidays.
Changes in HÉV timetables in the last days of the year
On 22 December, the HÉV will run according to the timetable for the working days of the school holidays. During the day on 24 December, the timetable will be the same as on public holidays. On lines H5, H6, H8 and H9, HÉVs will continue to run after 4 PM on Christmas Eve (less frequently than usual) until the late evening service closes.
On 25 and 26 December, the public holiday timetable will apply on all HÉV lines; from 27 to 29 December, trains will run according to the timetable for the end-of-year working days. On the night of 31 December to 1 January, night services will be provided on all HÉV lines, the statement says.
