Changes in Budapest Public Transport (BKV): updates on service cuts and altered routes
The Budapest Public Transport Company (BKV) had previously reduced the frequency of its services, but now, there are more frequent services in several locations.
Following a series of confusing and unfortunate communication mishaps, BKK has now announced a number of service cuts.
Based on this information, the following locations will be affected:
- Starting from February 5th, the route of the 298 telebus will be extended, and a new 275 bus service will be introduced in the Rákoscsaba-Újtelep area. This will improve access to the railway and provide transportation to new areas, such as the kindergarten, where previously, passengers had to rely on walking or using cars. Additionally, the route of bus 176E in the area will be changed, with BKK moving the bus stop to a school.
- The route of tram 12 will be extended to Lehel Square, creating a direct connection between Rákospalota and the bustling XIII district. This development will increase the frequency of tram services in Angyalföld and pave the way for the return of trams to Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Avenue, among other improvements. BKK did not provide a specific target date for this.
- The route of the 75 trolleybus will be extended to Kőbánya Alsó Railway Station, offering a direct link between Újlipótváros and the centre of Kőbánya.
- A new direct connection will be established in Újpest between Megyer and Káposztásmegyer I. The company has indicated that a public consultation on the plans will start soon.
- The Újbuda network will also see improvements, including the extension of bus number 33 and better connections from Andor Street to Kelenföld Station. This project is being prepared collaboratively by the company and the district.
According to a statement from BKK, the improvements to the 12-14 network, set to be implemented this year, were made possible by the reduction in peak-hour services on Mondays and Fridays. These reductions were designed to adapt to the changed travel needs since the Covid epidemic. BKK plans to provide an additional 243 million seat-kilometres of service, which is expected to result in over 2 million new public transport journeys by 2023, as reported by hvg.hu.
