Combo Sports You Could Soon Be Seeing

Completely new sports are fairly few and far between these days, with just about every concept involving a ball, track, or anything else already out there in the world. Much like the invention of brunch, however, people around the world have learned that smashing together two ideas to make a new one can have surprisingly great results. Combination sports, or combo sports for short, are the product of taking two established games and somehow meshing them together into a new experience. Some are obvious, but a few are starting to get a bit more creative!

Polocrosse

Horse-based sports are some of the oldest in the world and have featured in plenty of unusual combinations over the years. We’ve seen periods of art history where mounted sports statues were in vogue, and there has always been a place in the casino and betting world for them. To this day, you can find new horse and slot combinations like the Big Horsey Fortunes game or even racing and bingo combinations such as Slingo Racing.

The one universal about every representation is how elite horse sports can feel, and so the combination with another elite sport like lacrosse. If you’re at all familiar with the two sports, the combination looks fairly straightforward from the outside, although the official rules list for championships is an extensive one.

Bicycle Jousting

Sticking with the mounted sports theme, we now go back an extra few hundred years for our next sport. Jousting dates back as far as the 11th Century in Europe, although it’s fair to say it dropped out of fashion for around half a millennium. Originally used to train knights ready for battle, it was an often brutal activity thanks to that and as such, it was effectively gone by the 17th Century.

Nowadays, the horses are being replaced by bicycles, and the sharp wooden lances replaced by PVC tubing in an event that is a lot safer albeit still a little risky. Unlike Polocrosse above, there is no official body anywhere in the world for this new sport, with the events being hosted by a few dedicated cycling clubs.

Chess Boxing

It’s a lesser-known fact, and an often unexpected one, that both of the famous boxing Klitschko brothers are also lovers of chess. They’ve even managed to pull boxing legend Lennox Lewis into the chess circle, all the more impressive when you consider that the two events aren’t just an odd combination, but could even be opposed to each other.

It makes it even more bizarre then that chess boxing is such a popular combo sport at the moment with national organizations as well as international events established for almost two decades. Competitors alternate between boxing and playing chess, winning usually via knockout in boxing or by checkmate in chess. If nothing else, it’s a unique viewing experience.

These are just a few examples, and we didn’t even get to the more bizarre entries like Extreme Ironing! The best news is, the sky is the limit for combining new sports, just as long as you can get someone else to play.
