Budapest Metro Line 4 Opens

Budapest, March 28 (MTI) – Budapest’s fourth metro line, linking the railway stations Kelenfold in the southwest and Keleti in the east, was opened to the public today.

A ceremony was held in the presence of Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Mayor Istvan Tarlos at the Kelenfold terminus. In his speech Orban attributed the project to a unity that emerged amongst Hungarians in 2010. “Budapest will be a proud capital if it embarks on ambitious projects, something it can only do if it finds a way to cooperate with the central government,” he said.

Tarlos called the metro line one of Hungary’s biggest investment projects over the past few decades, a result of “chaotic preparations, then serious efforts”.

The current expansion of the underground network indicates that the leaders of Budapest and the central government “are willing and able to cooperate”.

The 7.3-kilometre long Metro 4 consisting of ten stations took eight years to build. Passengers can travel on the new metro line free of charge until the end of service on Sunday.
