As the golfing world eagerly anticipates the dawn of the 2024 Masters Tournament, speculation runs high regarding who will emerge victorious and don the coveted green jacket.
With Augusta National Golf Club’s pristine fairways awaiting the world’s top players, anticipation swirls around perennial contenders, emerging talents, and seasoned champions alike.
In this article, we delve into the potential frontrunners by analysing their form, past performances, and current standings to paint a picture of who might reign supreme in this year’s edition of golf’s most prestigious event.
The stage is set for an enthralling battle amidst the azaleas and towering pines of Augusta, so join us as we explore the leading contenders vying to etch their names into the annals of Masters history.
Rory McIlroy – 9/1
Still chasing that elusive title, Rory McIlroy is the joint favourite in the Masters odds to finally get his hands on a green jacket in 2024.
McIlroy is entering his 10th year without a major, and what better way to end that drought than by completing a lucrative career grand slam with a Masters victory?
That’s easier said than done, of course. But McIlroy has started the season with consistency, making the cut in all three of his tournaments at the time of writing and carding two top-25 finishes.
Scottie Scheffler – 9/1
The pressure of returning to Augusta National 12 months after you win the Masters should not be discounted.
The defending champion has to host a formal dinner party before carrying the burden of trying to retain his title.
Nonetheless, World No.1 Scottie Scheffler made a good account of himself last year — finishing tied for 10th on four under par.
The American knocked on the door of winning a second major when T2 at the PGA Championship and third at the US Open, and he has started 2024 well with four top-10 finishes and winning the Players Championship.
Jon Rahm – 10/1
If anyone can become just the fourth player in history to defend their Masters title, it’s likely Jon Rahm — who is 10/1 in the golf betting.
The Spaniard, who sent shockwaves through the world of golf when he announced that he was joining the controversial LIV in December, won the green jacket by a comfortable four strokes last year.
Rahm has been a model of consistency so far on the Saudi-backed tour though, recording top-10 finishes in his three tournaments to date — including coming third in Mayakoba.
The less demanding schedule of LIV Golf could play into Rahm’s favour as he attempts to defend his Masters title – you certainly wouldn’t rule him out.
Viktor Hovland – 14/1
It’s a matter of when, not if Viktor Hovland will win one of golf’s big four tournaments.
The 26-year-old, who had three PGA Tour wins in 2023 and his first FedExCup, recorded top-10 finishes at the Masters (T7) and the PGA Championship (T2) while also carding top-20 finishes in the US Open (19) and The Open (13).
While he hasn’t started this season quite as admirably, he has a new coach in the form of Grant Waite, and he could be the man to get Hovland over the line in a major — starting with the Masters.
