MEP Gyöngyösi: Hungary’s place in Europe – VIDEO

In a video, Hungarian MEP Márton Gyöngyösi (Non-Attached Member of the European Parliament) shares his views on Hungary’s place in Europe.
“Unfortunately, many Hungarian people still don’t understand what the European Union is for. Some think that the European Union is there to make decisions on matters that should be decided by us. That’s not true.
National states have a key role in the European Union, and there are many areas that are exclusively governed by the nations, outside the EU’s scope of competence. Education or healthcare are such areas.
Other people think that the European Union should be a much looser organization with basically no decision-making competences. That’s not true, either, because without cooperation, European countries would be unable to guarantee their own safety and welfare against such states as Russia or the Communist China.
The European Union is not a cure-all, but it’s an important organization where we can make a lot of friends through forming alliances and conducting good policies. It also allows us to find solutions to many of our problems.
Those who expect a miracle are wrong. But so are those who fail to use the opportunities. That’s why I work on finding partners in the European Union and represent the interests of the Hungarian people: a plannable life, a reduced pay gap and the protection of democracy. That’s also why I joined the European Christian Political Movement, so I can now work for the Hungarian people as a member of a large alliance.”
