Budapest Airport: Major developments underway at main Hungarian airgate

Major developments at Budapest Airport are set to continue. Among other things, a parking garage will be built at Terminal 2, and new aircraft stands and boarding gates will be constructed.

According to AIRportal.hu, the statement of the operator of Liszt Ferenc Airport, Budapest Airport, recalls that it has been continuously improving the quality of airport services and passenger experience for years, with airport developments worth more than HUF 130 billion (EUR 337 million) over the past 5 years.

In May this year, a number of major construction works will start. This will serve the long-term expansion and the high quality of service for the passenger traffic, as it has been growing steadily over the past 4 months.

This year’s annual passenger numbers are expected to exceed the 16.2 million recorded in 2019, and could exceed 30 million by 2030.

• Plans are already underway for a multi-storey car park in the immediate vicinity of Terminal 2, within walking distance of the entrance. The parking area will be called Relax and will provide 2,000 spaces on three floors in the first phase.
• Furthermore, the airport’s sewage network will be upgraded and the drainage system will be expanded to serve the airport’s needs for decades, AIRportal.hu writes.
• Simultaneously, a new access road to BUD Cargo City will be built. This will improve the service to the area and provide direct, fast access between the air cargo handling complex and the M4 motorway, relieving the congestion on the expressway.
• To cope with the increase in traffic, work will begin on the ground-filling of the new apron to accommodate aircraft ground handling. This expansion will allow 12 aircraft to be served simultaneously and is the first phase of a major apron upgrade.

Developments at Terminal 2A

There will be several improvements at Terminal 2A. In Pier 1, opened in 2020, there will soon be six gates for bus passenger boarding, instead of the current three. The main elements of the air handling system serving the departure hall will be replaced, significantly improving the air quality in the area.

The next phase of the renewal of the baggage reclaim hall will soon be completed, with two new, longer and more modern conveyors than the old ones. Four escalators have also been replaced with more modern models, which are now more energy-efficient.

The iconic Terminal 1, a listed building, will also be renewed, AIRportal reports.

Budapest Airport recalled that according to the latest independent survey, passengers also highly value the overhead facilities, with Budapest Airport ranking first among the 20 airports surveyed, ahead of Prague, Alicante and Barcelona. This is the first time in the history of the airport that the operator has achieved this prestigious position.
