New hotels to be built around Budapest Airport, Airport Hotel renewed
The Airport Hotel in Vecsés has been renovated with substantial state support, and further investments are planned for Budapest Airport in the near future.
Currently, there are over 300 hotel rooms across four hotels at Ferihegy and its immediate surroundings, plus a few smaller guesthouses, which together do not exceed 200 rooms. However, when Wing’s new hotel is completed, the total number of rooms will rise to over 700, Menedzsment Fórum reports.
As we reported earlier, the government recently acquired a majority stake in Budapest Airport Plc. In connection with this, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that welcoming 30 million passengers a year is a realistic goal. In the post-Covid recovery, 14.7 million people visited the airport last year. Doubling this figure will require significant investment, which is challenging in the short term, especially as the government is preparing further cutbacks and much depends on the French minority owner.
The new owners of Budapest Airport, the Hungarian state and its French partner Vinci, are expected to present a longer-term plan soon. This could include an additional hotel, which is scheduled to be built with an external real estate developer. The plan will also involve utilising not only the third terminal but also Terminal 1. Terminal 1 has long been an event centre and a hub for small aircraft traffic, but it has greater potential.
Additionally, a new hotel could be built next to the Market Central commercial centre at the major junction near Vecsés by the motorway to the airport. Only a quarter of the planned office park has been completed there, leaving a large area available for development.
Airport Hotel near Budapest Airport renewed
Some existing facilities in the nearby area outside the airport have been renewed or are undergoing renovation. The Airport Hotel Budapest Superior in Vecsés, which has been operating since 2008, has now completed a comprehensive transformation. The Hungarian owners financed half of the HUF 600 million renovation, with the government providing the other half (HUF 299,990,000) as targeted subsidies.
Hotel manager Krisztián Koloszár, who has been running the hotel for 14 years, believes that in the longer term, the plans for increasing tourist traffic justify additional medium-sized hotels.
So far, future investments include a hotel to be jointly developed by Wing and Budapest Airport, next to the Ibis Styles Hotel, which opened in 2018 in the area of the former central surface car park and will be part of the Tribe brand within the Accor Group.
The biggest name among the developers is Swietelsky, and the new facility will have 167 rooms. The hotel will cater to both tourists and business travellers, featuring a conference and meeting area for up to 150 people and a seventh-floor terrace for 60 people. Other commercial properties are also included in the project, named Airport City. A multi-storey car park and an intermodal transport hub are planned close to the new hotel as well.
