FM Szijjártó: Hungary backs urgent UN reform to overcome liberal obstacles

Hungary has an interest in the survival and effective operation of the UN, therefore the government is ready to participate in joint work for a genuine and rapid reform of the organisation, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said on Facebook after his visit to New York on Thursday.

After meeting Guy Ryder, Under-Secretary-General of the UN for Policy, Szijjártó said the world organisation was facing serious challenges so its leaders should finally move out of their comfort zone if they wanted to save the institution, which was now the last truly universal, inclusive platform for East-West dialogue, the ministry said in a statement.

US President “Donald Trump’s criticisms are justified, the UN is not functioning effectively today, in many cases, it is obstructed by the liberal mainstream, so it often grows too independent of its member states rather than helping them,” Szijjártó said.

“However, the situation can be remedied: we need to eliminate duplication and streamline the organisation, cut unnecessary costs, and focus on real global challenges,” he added. “Budapest has proven that the decentralisation of the UN’s operation is the right direction, there are several UN institutions operating effectively in Budapest, and we are ready to host even more,” Péter Szijjártó said.

  1. The U.N. is an absolute joke.

I realized that as far back as when I was studying international law, but I said even this kind of a U.N. is, if marginally, better than nothing.

These days I’m fully convinced that nothing would be better.

Disband the whole thing and start again, and do that every 50 or so years. For, there is simply no way to stop mission-creep and arrogation of power by unelected, unaccountable megalomaniacs who weasel their way into such organizations. The same should be done with the E.U., but it should be torn down and rebuilt every 25 years.

    • … As the US institutions are being torn down. And it turns out, the apparatus is pretty intricate. It is like playing Mikado. Let´s see what mayhem and unintended damage the current DOGE madness will inflict. A case in point:

Also very curious how Hungary´s fawning over China and China´s increasing sway in Hungary are going to play with Mr. Trump and his team. “Don´t mention the C-word?”.

And I have not seen any public reaction from our Politicians regarding Mr. Trump´s “beautiful” Gaza Riviera plan, including the 2 million Palestinian “resettlement” (or ethnic cleansing) to other sovereign states, it seems without any consultation. And they´re usually pretty excited when it comes to Israel and Mr. Trump! Has anyone? Very curious!

  2. Money donated by nations to the UN was used, through UNWRA, to hire hamas members that attacked Israel on Oct. 7th. UNWRA also employed the terrorists’ relatives. The UN is a corrupt agency. UN is also supporting schools in Gaza that train children to be terrorists.

Hungary should withdraw from the UN and ICC. Corrupt institutions do not merit Hungarian workers’ tax money.
