VIDEO: Wizz Air baggage handler suspended after shocking luggage mishandling at Gatwick

A baggage handler at London’s Gatwick Airport has been suspended after a video surfaced showing him forcefully hurling suitcases from a Wizz Air aircraft’s cargo hold. The incident, recorded on 6 February, depicts luggage being thrown with such vigour that some bags rebounded off the plane’s structure before landing on the conveyor belt.

The footage, initially published by The Sun, captures large suitcases being ejected from the cargo hatch, crashing onto the conveyor system below. The individual responsible was not visible in the video; however, the aggressive handling of the luggage was evident. Menzies Aviation, the ground handling company employing the worker, labelled the event as an “isolated incident”. Both Menzies and Wizz Air have issued apologies to passengers, emphasising their commitment to preventing such occurrences in the future. A Wizz Air spokesperson stated: “Such behaviour is not tolerated, and a full investigation has been launched to ensure it does not happen again.”

According to The Independent, the employee in question has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. Wizz Air assured passengers that this behaviour does not reflect their usual high standards and confirmed that the individual involved will not participate in the airline’s operations moving forward.

As one commenter on Twitter (X) pointed out, what the baggage handler did was highly unprofessional behaviour: “Why do baggage handlers think that it’s okay to treat other people’s possessions in this way and why do they think they won’t get caught? People would rather wait 5 minutes and have intact cases than have all their stuff damaged to get out of the airport quicker.” According to another comment writer, this incident is not isolated, as it is “done by employees in all airports”.

The incident has raised concerns about baggage handling practices and the potential for damage to passengers’ belongings. Both the airline and the ground handling service provider are taking measures to address the issue and reinforce proper procedures among staff to maintain service quality and passenger trust.
