Traffic chaos expected: Major closures on Budapest’s M0 motorway

Drivers should brace for significant traffic disruptions on the M0 motorway near Törökbálint, southwest of Budapest, as bridge renovation works kick off on Monday, 4 August. According to Magyar Közút Nonprofit Plc., the repairs and associated traffic restrictions are expected to last until 7 September.
Lane closures and full direction shutdown
The first phase of the project involves preparatory work around the busy M0–M7 interchange, between the 3+000 and 4+400 kilometre markers. For approximately five days, lane closures will be in place as crews set up the traffic redirection system.
Following this initial phase, authorities will fully close the section of the M0 motorway heading towards the M5 motorway. Traffic from the closed direction will be diverted in two ways:
- The inner lane will be rerouted to the opposite carriageway, meaning it will temporarily run against the usual flow of traffic heading towards the M1 motorway.
- The outer lane will be redirected to the parallel collector-distributor road segment near the M0–M7 interchange.
Despite the extensive changes, drivers will still be able to enter and exit the motorway at the M0–M7 junction, as ramps will remain open.
Delays likely, especially from Lake Balaton
Magyar Közút is warning of increased congestion, particularly for drivers coming from Lake Balaton. Entering the M0 from the M7 motorway may become especially difficult due to heavier-than-usual traffic and challenging merging conditions.
The public road authority urges motorists to plan ahead, check real-time traffic updates on utinform.hu, or use GPS navigation tools to find alternative routes.
Expect a full month of disruptions
With one of Budapest’s busiest ring roads affected, serious delays and traffic jams are expected throughout the duration of the renovation works. The bridge upgrade is necessary for long-term safety and infrastructure maintenance, but will undeniably cause headaches for daily commuters and summer travellers alike.
Magyar Közút asks for drivers’ patience and understanding during the renovation period, emphasising the importance of road safety and encouraging everyone to monitor traffic conditions before departure.
