BBC relaunches Hungarian-language news after nearly 20 years

The BBC has officially announced plans to relaunch Hungarian-language news programming after nearly two decades, as part of a pilot project modelled on the successful BBC News Polska.

Hungarian BBC

The BBC confirmed to Media1.hu that it is planning to launch Hungarian-language news content on a trial basis. The aim is to provide independent and impartial news to Hungarian-speaking audiences, following the model of the recently launched BBC News Polska.

The BBC World Service currently broadcasts in 43 languages, with all content characterised by editorial independence. While no official start date has been shared, the application deadline for related job postings is August 20, making it likely the service could launch in time for the upcoming election campaign. A BBC spokesperson stated:

The BBC World Service has ambitious plans to bring independent and impartial news to even more people around the world and in more languages. Following the successful launch of BBC News Polska, our Polish-language platform, we’re planning a similar pilot for Hungarian-speaking audiences. Further details will be announced later this year.

Back after a 20-year hiatus

Hungarian-language programming from the BBC may return after nearly 20 years. The previous Hungarian service shut down at the end of 2005, when the British public broadcaster closed several Eastern European language channels. The new initiative is expected to focus on digital platforms, offering online articles, video content, and an active social media presence to engage audiences.

Following BBC News Polska’s example

Launched last year, BBC News Polska quickly gained a sizable following in Poland. The Polish-language service provides daily news, analysis, and background reports with a focus on accurate and trustworthy information. Its success is largely due to a strong commitment to independent journalism and the accessibility of its content across online, social media, and video platforms. The BBC is expected to apply a similar strategy for Hungarian audiences, building on insights gained from the Polish model.

Strategy and expansion

In recent years, the BBC has significantly expanded its international language offerings to reach wider global audiences. The goal is for the BBC to serve as a reliable source of news even in regions where independent reporting is limited. According to the BBC, access to accurate information is a fundamental right, regardless of language or geography.
