Budapest already closing streets ahead of 20 August celebrations

Budapest has begun implementing significant traffic restrictions well ahead of Hungary’s 20 August national holiday, with closures starting as early as 9 August and set to remain in place until 23 August. The measures, introduced by police to accommodate preparations and events for the country’s biggest public celebration, will affect multiple districts and key riverside areas.
Four categories of restrictions
The police have divided the affected areas into four categories:
- Full road closures: certain streets will be completely inaccessible to traffic.
- Partial or time-based closures: some routes will be blocked only at specific times.
- Temporary lifting of one-way restrictions: allowing traffic flow in both directions on certain streets.
- No-stopping zones: strict parking bans in designated areas.
For example, parking is prohibited from 9 August at 00:00 until 23 August at 06:00 on:
- Jane Haining rakpart, from the Mahart International Ship Station to Sörház utca (Districts I, II, and V)
- The riverside side of Sztehlo Gábor rakpart, from Margaret Bridge to the area near Halász utca
Vehicle removal and information hotline
Drivers who park in a no-stopping zone risk having their vehicles towed. Owners whose cars have been removed can call the police’s free hotline at 06-80-180-780 to find out where their vehicle has been taken and receive further instructions, police.hu writes.
Why so early?
The early start to traffic restrictions is linked to the extensive preparations required for the 20 August festivities, which include large-scale events, fireworks, and riverside attractions. This year, organisers have also promised affordable beer for visitors, in a bid to make the celebration more accessible.
